we're back!

Date Night has been on the back burner for many weeks now. we had company for many of those weeks and then we took one or two weeks off simply because we were spending so much money on eating out with visitors.we also realized that Date Night began to become a very expensive venture and were trying to come up with more inventive ideas than a fancy dinner.

so tonight, we tried to keep it simple. simple it was. we went to Dish in La Canada. online, the menu seemed nice enough and the prices were reasonable, so we decided to give it a try.  as we were driving there, Jesse was reading about it in our Eat: Los Angeles book. he suspiciously asked, "is this the place you're thinking of?" and proceeded to read a description of 'good for breakfast' and 'family friendly' - code for 'old people' and 'kids'. it was an apt description.

there was a distinct vibe about the place. from the outside it looked like an converted house, simultaneously cozy and chic. the inside looked a little like The Village Haus at Disneyland. the crowd were LC locals as there was a general ease about everyone that people get when they feel at home in a public place. i can certainly appreciate that, but being the only people that didn't feel that way, was a little uncomfortable. it was so laid back, but at the same time - i felt like everyone was staring at us and knew we were from 'out of town.'

given all this, i took to trying to figure out everyone's story. what their relationships were to one another, if they enjoyed each other's company, what they're really thinking... it always surprises me how i tend to assume that everyone is miserable and hates the people they are with. what the hell does that say about me? it also allowed us the opportunity to see 10 years into the future and imagine what our relationship might become. will we be the fat couple who go to dinner at a mediocre restaurant on a friday night and don't speak to each other? or in 30 years will we be the old couple at the bar working on our third martini? (they did have an impressive martini menu. red flag for old person hot spot)

luckily (?) Jesse doesn't have nearly as pessimistic view of life and aging as i do. he was satisfied that we were the best looking people in there and was confident that we will never become boring.
